There is nothing like an interesting cushion to make a statement, and we think this range of cushions and other home lovelies by handmade by me is just the thing to cheer up a boring space. ‘I get my inspiration from just about anywhere,’ says designer Sera Holland. ‘Sometimes it’s a shape I like, or a colour. Sometimes I know exactly what I want to do, and sometimes I just want to play around with different elements and see what happens. I would imagine that people think I’m bird and flower crazy, but sometimes my designs have more subtle meanings like the “another rainy day” design which was inspired by the consistently rainy weather and lack of summers I experienced while living in Ireland for six years.’ Sera started designing textiles by accident. ‘My background is in graphic design and when my sister was getting married I really wanted to give her and her husband something unique. They were both obsessed with their three dogs so I designed a very graphic pattern of them (my Barking Mad design), found a place that could print the design onto fabric and learned to sew!’ Two cushion covers, eight napkins and three doggy bandanas led to handmade by me. If you would like to create a bespoke design as a special gift, Sera will create something just for you. She is also happy to adapt her existing designs and custom-make items to suit your home. Handmade by me products are available on Etsy. Have a look at Sera’s blog handmadebymeblog.com or their Facebook page for more information about where to buy her gorgeous wares. The cushions cost R360.
