The first pieces in a brand-new furniture line by Haldane Martin will launch at Design Joburg this weekend. Inspired by evolutionist Charles Darwin, the collection is titled Endless Forms Most Beautiful and is a refreshingly playful departure from the designer’s signature limited-edition pieces.
‘It’s all about taking existing furniture and manufacturing techniques and evolving them to create well-considered, balanced pieces that are beautiful, comfortable, well-made, economical, eco-friendly, on-trend and locally manufactured,’ says Martin of the versatile new line, which certainly ticks a lot of boxes.
The first range within this line – called SIM-PLY – currently consists of colourful dining chairs, lounge chairs and bar stools, with a selection of café tables, coffee tables, dining tables and sidetables soon to follow.
We love the fun, curved elements at play, and while these pieces aren’t limited edition, there’s still the option of customising them with bespoke finishes: the birch plywood seats and backs are veneered in ash or could be sprayed any of the 9500 NCS colours; the upholstered seat, back and arm pads come in a variety of velvets from the Home Fabrics Chamonix collection, available in 53 colours; and using your own fabric or leather is also an option.
