South Africa pulsates with creative energy and is home to a number of renowned artists. Although the focus tends to fall on emerging talent in cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban also boasts a number of inspiring, imaginative individuals. GIH Studio, based in Windermere, was founded in 2009 by one of these innovative individuals – Gareth Henderson. His studio specialises in creating beautifully designed retail and hospitality spaces, as well as contemporary furniture pieces.
Gareth’s business is about combining quality with value, with an emphasis on simplicity and competitive pricing. He is a true master of his craft, producing spaces that are irresistibly inviting and furniture items that beg to be collected. If you visit one of GIH’s spaces, you’ll notice common themes – large wooden surfaces and industrial-style touches – in his highly popular furniture pieces, such as the Halo bar-stools or Girl with a Rack coatrack.
‘Durban is thought to be the forgotten cousin of creativity in comparison to Cape Town and Johannesburg, and therefore has to generate its own inspiration.’ – Gareth Henderson
This GIH folding chair was filmed to highlight its linear movement, where form follows function.
Gareth’s advice to young designers is to ensure that what they are creating is relevant and contributes positively to the South African design scene.
