Fall in Love Colab

The recent collaboration of two of Jozi’s most talented young designers really got our attention. Teaming ceramics and jewellery, Henriette Botha and Monica Magni of Colori a Mano (CaM) created Fall in Love - a new range that cues the Neo-African aesthetic. While Henriette’s jewellery picks up on the colours and textures of tribal pieces in an altogether contemporary way, Monica’s handcrafted earthenware sees familiar African iconography incorporated into paired back, everyday objects. We chatted to the designers about their work and what’s behind their collaboration. Describe your craft… My work is about functional ceramics aimed at bringing practicality, art and design together in both modern and classic majolica traditions. (Monica) I create high quality jewellery pieces on an international level, using unconventional materials. The idea is to use South African craft in a new and modern way. (Henriette) Have collaborative exhibitions become a more popular way to exhibit. If so, why? Definitely. It’s about networking and creating an interest in a product one wants the public to pay attention to. It also keeps things fresh and exciting. The fashionable and Africa Chic elements of CaM’s Ciao Bella Embossed range tied in so well with Henriette Botha’s jewellery range. Why do you love what you do? I was doing law and found the office environment suffocating. After studying fresco restoration in Florence I discovered that I loved the beauty that hard physical labour could produce. I have the seriousness of having a business to nurture as well as the freedom and space to play, design and imagine. (Monica) Being able to translate South African craft into a modern language (especially in jewellery) is so exciting and knowing that I’m giving back to the community by developing skills and jobs is rewarding. (Henriette) How does your work pair well together? The individual ranges show off an African elegance. Each brings out the best in the other - the colourful, intricate jewellery set against plain white, elaborate ceramics means that the eye never gets bombarded with too much information. Henriette Botha's jewellery dresses the fashion world, while CaM dresses the home decor world. Pieces from the Fall in Love collection are available through and Interviewed by Mila Crewe-Brown
