Exclusive Books has once again raised the bar on retail design. Honoured with two design awards in the past year, the regional South African book purveyor received the coveted Prix Versailles Award in Paris and the Retail Design and Development Award for best store design in South Africa last September, both awarded to Exclusive Books’ Ballito store in KwaZulu-Natal.
Because the Prix Versailles are the world’s leading awards for store, hotel and restaurant architecture around the globe, judged by a jury of renowned international architects and designers, it’s a great honour for the Exclusive Books in Ballito to receive this accolade.

According to Frank Boner, CEO of Exclusive Books, the Ballito store – which opened its doors in April 2017 – follows the vision for bookshops crafted by the Exclusive Books’ executive team and the company’s retail design agency, Dakota Design. ‘We have designed a space that encourages customers to linger and have conversations. Our Ballito store takes that vision to the next level, and we’re delighted that it’s been recognised in this manner,’ adds Boner.
The store’s many standout elements include handblown lampshades and striking Japanese wave patterns printed onto the store’s bulkheads, backlit for emphasis.
