Delicate, refined and inspired by an ancient time, we love ceramist, Christo Giles’ new range of dragon-scale bowls. ‘I’m inspired by pots from the past, especially old Oriental pots,’ says Christo. ‘But most of my ideas come from the process of making and trying out different ideas or tools.’ These bowls in particular, which are 7cm high, are handcrafted on a potter’s wheel and fired to 1300 degrees in a gas kiln. Done in a pale celadon glaze, each indent is executed by hand with a brass dragon-scale tool. Christo Giles’ dragon-scale bowls are priced from R150 each. You can also view and purchase Christo’s pieces at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, 10 Wellington Road, Durbanville, Cape Town until 18 July 2013.
