Designer Spotlight: Celestina

You may have seen her minaudieres on A-list Hollywood celebrities and top-tier New York socialites. Sandra Bullock, Aerin Lauder, Tory Burch, Carolina Herrera, Halle Berry, Lucy Liu and Queen Noor of Jordan have all been snapped by the paparazzi clasping a Celestina minaudiere at red-carpet events. Whether it’s a delicate purse of filigreed silver, a sleek geometric cube of mango wood or a gleaming clutch of mother-of-pearl, Celestina’s signature has always been that of refined elegance, a blend of Eastern exoticism with Western sophistication, anchored by high-quality artisanal workmanship. Inspired by her native Philippines, the former model-turned-accessories and jewellery designer branched out into furniture, stamping her impeccable signature on a capsule collection of accent tables, benches, stools, decorative boxes and table accessories. The designer, whose full name is Celestina Ocampo, launched the furniture line together with her entrepreneur husband, Ricardo.  She says it was a natural, organic development. “Since Celestina’s launch six years ago, when I first came up with a capsule collection of minaudieres, I promised myself that the direction of my work will always have something to do with my roots. I have used Philippine natural materials and continued to discover artisans from different regions of my country. I developed their age-old techniques and reinvented them to finally create products that I believe will have global appeal. The feel of my work resonates from being in love with my country, with its people and the beauty I have been surrounded with since my childhood. This is how the aesthetic of Celestina is born in every piece I create.” Celestina is available internationally at Barneys and Neiman Marcus in the US, Feathers in London, Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, and online via, Net-a-Porter and Couture Lab.   Text: Bambina Olivares Wise
