design of the times: join the build-up to design joburg
For design lovers, May is all about Design Joburg featuring Rooms on View. In its second year, this event is shaping up to be even more exciting than the inaugural edition in 2017. House and Leisure is the media sponsor of one of the innovative CoLab stands, which exhibits work by rising design star Tshepo Sealetsa in collaboration with architect and designer Joe van Rooyen of JVR Architects & Design and decor maven Mavromac & Gatehouse.
Sealetsa needs little introduction to HL readers: not only was he one half of the duo – he worked with artist Banele Khoza – mentored by editor Tiaan Nagel last year for SABC3’s Win A Home competition, but the gorgeous interior-design results of their efforts were also featured in our Before & After issue early this year.
The stand is set to be spectacular, with a four-metre ‘silo’ structure encircled by luxurious linen drops and bookended by a pair of room-sized cubes. Each will be filled with carefully selected furniture pieces, lighting and fabrics from Mavromac & Gatehouse, a company well known for its beautifully designed furniture and accessories, as well as its spectrum of luxe fabrics and wallcoverings.
Being revealed for the first time here is the new Mavromac & Gatehouse outdoor furniture collection. Joe van Rooyen and Hanneke Swart of Mavromac & Gatehouse teamed up to produce this covetable new line, which is destined to be a highlight of the weekend. (Subscribe to HL at the show and you’ll stand a chance to take home one of their contemporary outdoor rocking chairs, or you can enter a general competition to win a variety of these gorgeous furniture pieces.)ALSO READ: Creatives Tshepo Sealetsa & Banele Khoza decorate a colour-infused dream home
The 2018 CoLab project is brought to visitors in conjunction with paint brand Fired Earth, and each designer will devise a signature paint colour for use within their CoLab stand. Event patrons can purchase their preferred paint shades on the spot from the Fired Earth retail point. After the show, the range will be available at Builders Warehouse and Builders Express stores across the country.
CoLab designers and architects also include stellar creatives such as Liam Mooney, Heather Boting, Buzwe Mabuza and Donald Nxumalo.
As on the House and Leisure-sponsored stand, more established designers will serve as mentors to an exciting array of young design talents including Praveen Dinna and Jadene Naidoo, Jacoline Sema and Tuami Zulu.
plus there’s even more to look forward to:

• Design-sussed consumers will enjoy a dedicated shopping area called Retail Corridor, where they can peruse the offerings of Skinny laMinx, Avoova, Flaunt, Alexa Lili and Haldane Martin, among others.
