'Day of the Dead' soaps

Recently we featured a series of quirky soaps by designer Daniel Ting Chong. The range was made in collaboration with Nature's Skin Food in Joburg, and we're thrilled to say they've teamed up with another designer, this time Joburg-based Fiona Goldthorpe, to make another stylish selection of sweet-smelling goodies. 'The range of designer soaps was inspired by the Mexican 'Day of the Dead' theme,' Fiona told HL. 'I love the graphic nature of this theme and thought it could transfer so well into this type of product,' she explains, adding that she thinks the 'folk' and 'tribal' themes are set to become popular trends (we agree). Fiona explained that the collaborators went through a lengthy process of painstaking tweaks to create three different moulds (for three different variants). 'We also had to decide which ingredients would work well with the designs'. As per the soapmakers' general ethos, they used all 100 per cent natural ingredients (vegan friendly with no animal fats) and only essential oils, with no synthetic fragrance oils that could irritate sensitive skin. The result is a beautiful, unique product available in three variants: • Activated Charcoal (black) • Crushed Pearl (white) with lemongrass oil - made from real crushed pearls of Thailand. These have been used for centuries by the Chinese and are great for the skin. • Asian Tree Bark with eucalyptus and spearmint oils – also wonderful for the skin, especially for healing problems such as eczema or psoriasis. The soap is currently available through Fiona's website, and is stocked at 'Life Unplugged', 4th Avenue Parkhurst and 'Lucky Fish' at 44 Stanley, Milkpark, Jhb.
