Daniela’s Deliciously Decadent

Daniela’s Deliciously Decadent stores in Cape Town and Durban have become synonymous with mouth-watering pastries, in particular macaroons. HL spoke to Daniela Dotan about her passion for sweet treats, the art of creating macaroons and buying Daniela’s creations online... Where did your passion for food, and pastries in particular, begin? I've always had a love for all things sweet. As a child, my dad was often away and would send treats home for the family. I have fond childhood memories of unwrapping packages of Turkish Delight, Caramel, Halva and Jaffa Cakes but this excitement did not automatically translate into a passion for cooking and baking. So, how did you get into the industry? Growing up, I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I often meet chefs who have been passionate about cooking their whole lives; for me it was just co-incidental that I found myself enrolled at the Silwood School of Cookery. I didn’t have great dreams of becoming a cordon bleu chef. To be honest, when I first arrived at Silwood, I thought I was attending finishing school: we were learning to cook, to set tables and arrange pretty flowers. A few lessons in, my life changed and now, I live my passion every day. Tell us about Daniela’s Deliciously Decadent. I have beautiful shops in two of the most amazing cities in South Africa: Cape Town and Durban. You can also order boxes of 12 or 24 macaroons online and they will be delivered anywhere in South Africa, packaged in a luxury gift box. Daniela's Deliciously Decadent specialises in Parisian Macaroons, Boutique Cakes, Confectionery and Chocolate Brownies. We work with real ingredients to produce handcrafted pleasure. I have a strong belief that treats are not for everyday, so when you do indulge, it must really be worth it and special attention is given to portion sizes, colours, textures, the marriage of flavours and the balance of sweetness to make Daniela’s really worth the wait, I hope. Your speciality is macaroons. What is a macaroon? A macaroon can only be described as a little mouthful of pure pleasure! A macaroon is an almond cookie with a thin, crisp shell which gives way to a soft, nutty inside filled with a flavoured chocolate cream. Brightly coloured in a rainbow of hues, we’ve tried to make Daniela’s macaroons look as delicious as they taste. From lemon to lime, turquoise and violet the only limit is the imagination at work in the kitchen and we’ve had such fun experimenting! We’ve really tried to preserve the elegance and style associated with macaroons, which originated in Paris. We’re also proud to say that our macaroons are completely hand-made using quality almonds, sugar, real eggs and chocolate. Is there a particular way to store macaroons? Your delicious mouthfuls of heaven should be stored in the fridge, enjoyed at room temperature and eaten within three days of purchase... we’ve never heard of a macaroon lasting for three days, though – they’re far too tempting! People are constantly delighted by the macaroon flavours you create and their colours! You were tweeting about Red Velvet and Sesame and Fig macaroons last week! Yes, we really have fun with them! We have a variety of flavours - at our last count over 30 – and each flavour has its own distinctive colour. We change flavours often and they are subject to seasonal availability. The most popular flavours are Vanilla, Chocolate, Pistachio, Caramel, Strawberry and Lemon and generally, these are always available to delight your taste buds. If there’s a flavour that I just love... We will usually have our most popular flavours in stock but we love trying out new things and giving our customers a surprise, so in addition to the favourites, we will create interesting flavours daily for you to enjoy. The flavours of the day will be posted on Facebook and Twitter so ‘like’ or follow us to receive regular updates. If there is a flavour you cannot live without, let us know and we will whip up a batch just for you. For more information about Daniela’s Deliciously Decadent, see or email Text: Candice Botha
