Cut-out detailing

I loved the cut-out detail when I saw Holly Fulton’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection, which featured her eye-catching laser-cut, patent leather cocktail dress and skirts. It looks like the fabric has been punched, leaving quite a striking effect. I have always liked layering and this puts a new spin on it – the cut-outs can reveal another colour fabric underneath or just open space, making it quite a versatile design technique. And now this look is being emulated in homeware too. We've noticed this trend in fabrics from Sahco (white floral pattern) and Zimmer And Rohde (brown fabric) both available locally through Home Fabrics. The interactive carpet by Joanna Rusin is another innovative idea – you can make up your own pattern by inserting the felt buttons. Similarly, the punched Luisa footstool by Softline mimics this effect. The punched-out flowers reveal your carpet or floor underneath. Both are available at the Modern Garden Company in Green Point, Cape Town. The cubic coasters, molecular coasters and molecular bowl by Jonathan Krawczuk of DesignedMade in the UK is another fun example of the trend appearing in decor. Other local products demonstrating this trend include the felt bags by Stephanie Bentum of Krafthaus, the bird card by Skinny la Minx and punched seating from Dokter & Misses.   Text: Decor editor Jeanne Botes
