Our 2013 May issue House of the Month belongs to engineer couple Philippus and Reani Fouché. They might border the Irene Dairy Farm in Pretoria and its drift of healthy cows, but it’s a far cry from other country homes. ‘We’ve always dreamed of living in a minimalist, contemporary home,’ say the Fouchés and it’s with this vision that they enlisted the help of Mathews and Associates Architects. The facade, with its windowless frontage and corrugated iron, immediately recalls the ascetic restraint of Swedish barns, while the combination of pale wood and exposed concrete as the home’s base gives off a sense of calm. But most of all we love that this couple fully supported the local design industry by filling their home with proudly South African pieces.
