colour blocking trend
Colour was pinpointed as a major trend for the year in our 2013 HL Trend Report (January/ February issue), with Greens, Purples and Blues in particular making their mark. Pantone’s recent announcement of Emerald Green as its 2013 Colour of the Year has furthermore encouraged people to turn to colour as a means of livening up their homes. Locally, Plascon’s 2013 Colour Forecast identifies a selection of brights as the way forward when updating different aspects of your decor. Internationally acclaimed colour expert and Plascon’s colour manager, Anne Roselt, says, ‘These trendy brights will bring that colourful spark to summer whether they’re painted on a wall or on tired furniture that is in need of revitalising.’ One of the simplest trends to adopt into a space is colour blocking, as you can start small and introduce colour into your home in minor doses. Choose a stand-out hue and accessorise accordingly, starting either with a feature wall (if you’re brave) or an item of furniture. Hellooow Handmade’s latest range of ceramic beaded chandeliers comes in various bright shades, and is therefore perfect for translating this popular trend into your home. Owner Merewyn De Heer tells HL, ‘We have recently started prototyping a new 'colour blocked range' based on the current fashion and fabric trends in gorgeous sorbet or bright colour combinations… such fun!’ Reviving traditional crafts, their contemporary beaded jewellery and chandeliers are handmade by a group of HIV-positive ladies from the KZN Midlands, who use this skill to sustain themselves and their families. Always reinventing their collection, Merewyn adds, ‘We can dip dye the beads to create matt sophisticated shades to suit all interiors and we also custom-make for clients that require specific proportions, shapes or colours.’ To view the range in its entirety or for more information visit hellooow.co.za.
