We recently spotted these bright and bold kitchen utensils on the Meekel online store website. Made from coconut wood, these creations hail from Durban’s design duo the Shaw Sisters, who have a special eye for handmade products. The sisters – Angela Shaw of Koop Design and Janet Shaw of The Zulu Beadwork Project – proudly expose the ‘rich crafting heritage’ of KwaZulu Natal, bringing beadwork, woodwork and glassware into the local design market. The pair say, ‘Many of the traditional crafters have been relegated to curio vendors and we believe that with appropriate design interventions and an understanding of the boutique market their product can be seen and valued in a new way.’ Meekel owner and curator Kerry Hugill adds that, ‘The Shaw Sisters love handmade product and they look for ways to collaborate with these master craftspeople in the KZN surrounds.’ The Coconut utensils each have a beautifully sprayed handle available in a colour of your choice, and you can take your pick from the range comprising a spatula (5 x 35cm), medium wooden spoon (8 x 26cm) and large wooden spoon (10 x 32cm). Order yours online from Meekel for R48 for an individual utensil and R154 for a set of three. Email email@example.com for more information. Delivery time is approximately two weeks.
