urban cities inspire fabrica's new range of rugs
Kirsten Townsend, who heads up creative consultancy Fabrica, has looked to the road maps and architecture of urban areas in Johannesburg and Cape Town to come up with a new collection of rugs. The Citymapmats range translates the facades of buildings and windows into abstract-patterned carpets, which are hand-tufted using 100% wool. To create them, Kirsten helped train local crafters in the necessary skills and worked closely with expert weavers in India.
This project forms part of a larger collaboration at Gathere, a new co-working space, studio and workshop in Kramerville, where international platform Ants will be hosting Fabrica's Citymapmats alongside work by Henriette Botha and They're Wonted.
