Business of Design is a new two-day seminar aimed at small- to medium-size design businesses or start-ups and recent graduates looking to take their ideas or processes to the next level. Co-founded by Trevyn and Julian McGowan, who are responsible for the majority of exports of South African design products through their companies SOURCE and Southern Guild, and Laurence Brick and Cathy O’Clery, the creative duo behind 100% Design SA, the Business of Design programme starts in Johannesburg and Cape Town in October.
‘Over the years that we have worked in the development, promotion and export of South African design and craft, and surrounding creative industries, we have come to an understanding that there are shared obstacles, common misconceptions and basic errors hampering potential economic success,’ explains Trevyn.
‘Our combined experience allowed us to formulate a programme that addresses many of the most pertinent issues faced in growing a design-related business and, with the participation of leading design and business experts, to create a powerful and intensive experience to instigate immediate change.’
Sharing their keys to success are invited speakers including furniture designer John Vogel, conceptual creative Porky Hefer and fashion guru Marianne Fassler.
Experts from Sage Pastel and PWC will introduce business systems that save time and make money, giving insights on how to ensure design-driven ideas create value in the marketplace. Laurence Brick, the co-founder of Loads of Living, will present a talk on commerciality, while former House and Leisure Associate Editor Cathy O’Clery will lead a panel on how to approach the media. ‘Designers assume that because something is gorgeous, the press will feature it, but that’s naive,’ she says.
Other talks include Building a Brand, Managing Yourself and Your Team, and Copyright and Intellectual Property.
Says Trevyn, ‘Over the course of 48 hours, we want creatives to be inspired, encouraged and propelled to do things differently, and to grow their business in the rapidly burgeoning marketplace.’
Business of Design takes place in Cape Town 15–16 October and Joburg 22–23 October.
