Bicycle Portraits Book
The coffee table series called Bicycle Portraits, by friends and fellow cyclists Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler, presents a cross section of 162 of the country’s various bicycle users. From all walks of life, and with different reasons for cycling, each individual portrait is a snapshot of bicycle owners and their bikes countrywide. The series contains three books, each with 54 individual stories, and essays by local and international cycling figures, including Nobel prize-winning author JM Coetzee, and the godfather of mountain biking, Gary Fisher. The books are designed by Gabrielle Guy and they have also teamed up with local artist Gabrielle Raaff , whose hand-painted watercolour maps indicate the location of each portrait. At the onset, Bicycle Portraits aimed to find out who rides bicycles, why they ride them, if and why they love them, and of course why so few South Africans choose bicycles as a means of transport. Beautifully photographed and edited, the books offer a unique perspective on South Africa’s small but growing bicycle culture. We think one or even all three in the series would make a fabulous addition to your collection. Bicycle Portraits Books are available to order through their website.
