Ballet Under The Stars

Celebrate Sundays in style with a double bill of ballet at Maynardville. From 19 January to 16 February 2014, one of Cape Town’s oldest open-air theatres will host The Firebird and Les Sylphide. The Firebird tells the tale of Kostchei, who casts a spell on anyone caught in his domain. Under his spell, he holds a group of young maidens in captivity at his castle. A magical Firebird is captured by the young Prince Ivan Tzarevitch and she begs him to release her in exchange for a magical feather, which he can use to summon her aid at any time. Les Sylphides is the ultimate tribute to the great Romantic ballets. With picture-perfect ballerinas fluttering across the stage, it is evocative and sheer poetry in movement. A young poet wanders through the forest, dreaming about his inspirations. He encounters a group of woodland spirits dancing in the moonlight and joins them in their joyful abandon. Tickets are priced from R110 – R130 and are available through Computicket or Artscape’s dial-a-seat on 021-421-7695. Text Katharyn Williams-Jaftha
