Margot Molyneux, a Cape Town-based women’s wear label, produces original, small-run collections with a focus on simple, classically styled items. We love her new Autumn ’13 Collection and have taken note of one item in particular – a stylish (and very comfortable) winter cape. HL asked Margot Molyneux and Grethe Bredenkamp (co-designer at MM) about this one-of-a-kind product. ‘We love capes. We’ve made them for the past three seasons, each one being an updated version of the previous season. Our main aim is to design something that brings an extra element of sophistication to any outfit. It’s long, warm, comfortable and looks good on and fits anyone – a great design piece for your wardrobe that elevates any outfit. Plus it has pockets – and who doesn’t love pockets?’ The fabrics used change from season to season, depending on what’s available (the capes currently come in Melton for great winter warmth). Margot designs from a place of need rather than trend-focused. Although influenced and inspired by trends, her vision is to create elegant, sophisticated clothes that are comfortable and appealing to a variety of women. ‘Our processes at Margot Molyneux are fairly fluid; we’ll have an idea for a new design, make a rough pattern, sample it and then do changes if necessary,’ says Grethe of their design process. ‘We always think of the customer and how they would wear it. We’ve come to realise that just because one of us likes a particular style or shape, doesn’t mean it suits the brand or target market.’ The pair work from their studio in Claremont. Mungo & Jemima, The Neighbourgoods Market at the Biscuit Mill and Mr & Mrs in Cape Town, amongst others, stock Margot Molyneux clothing. The cape is also available at Neighbourgoods in Joburg.
