Bartering is alive and well once more, but don’t expect any of the usual items from yesteryear! Instead, envision delightful and creative exchanges including decor items and accessories. This is the offering of Durban artist Terry Angelos, and fellow creative Lauren Wallet, who have created a wonderful exchange-based website. Being the first of its kind in South Africa, it’s a prime example of collaborative consumption, a major trend and movement identified by Rachel Botsman. Both Terry and Lauren are involved in the Durban market and pop-up shop culture and have a keen perception for the curation process, which sets their online platform apart. Creatives, crafters and makers sign up, pay a small management fee and submit products of their own. They are then able to exchange items. The experience is thrilling, as it has the satisfaction of online shopping sans the hefty credit card bill. The pair also ensures that the standards are maintained as they style, photograph and divide the products into imaginative themes. The result is a beautiful and unusual gallery of products from local designers and market stall owners. Their next exchange starts on 8 February 2013, with packages kicking off from R300.
