A favourite new hangout for city locals, The General Store joins the ever-growing list of foodie gems on Cape Town’s burgeoning Bree Street. The trendy spot, with its pine wooden hatch and white subway tiles, is a boutique grocer and deli that serves up delicious light meals and baked goods every weekday.
Breakfast fare includes granola and fruit, smashed avo toast or poached eggs, with sandwiches and soups on the menu for later in the day. The lunchtime buffet changes daily, including quiches, pies, curries and proteins like pesto chicken breasts and beef fillet. These should definitely not be eaten unaccompanied by the array of fresh salads on offer, incorporating ingredients like Asian noodles, beans and roasted vegetables with an Ottolenghi-style flair and flavour. These can be had to stay or to go, for either R35, R50 or R70 depending on your chosen size.
The coffee on offer is by Rosetta Roastery, and particularly heavenly when paired with a piece of one of the daily changing cakes or other sweet treats. Rumour has it that the chocolate and pistachio brownies, made with 70% cocoa chocolate, have already garnered themselves a solid fan base. Why not head down there today to taste for yourself?
