8 Top Guy Fawkes Pics

Remember, remember the fifth of November... It's the date that will be remembered forever in British history thanks to Guy Fawkes and his anti-government comrades way back in 1605, who attempted to set alight approximately 36 barrels of gunpowder at the House of Lords with the aim of killing King James I. His plot was unsuccessful and unfortunately, Fawkes was assassinated along with seven co-conspirators. But his legacy lives on over 400 years later. Fawkes' story has ignited the imaginations of many would-be revolutionaries and story-tellers, perhaps most popular being Alan Moore and David Lloyd, who were responsible for the graphic novel-turned-film V for Vendetta. In the name of all things explosive, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 has also inspired folk around the world to set off fireworks and light bonfires on this date each year. Of course, this makes room for amazing Instagram shots, and we take a look at some of the best from around the globe here:

Happy Bonfire Night!--------------------------------- Today is the day we commemorate the failure of the November 1605 Gunpowder Plot by a gang of Roman Catholic activists led by Warwickshire-born Robert Catesby. When Protestant King James I acceded to the throne, English Catholics had hoped that the persecution they had felt for over 45 years under Queen Elizabeth would finally end. When this didn't transpire, a group of conspirators resolved to assassinate the King and his ministers by blowing up the Palace of Westminster during the state opening of Parliament. Guy (Guido) Fawkes and his fellow conspirators, having rented out a house closed to the Houses of Parliament, managed to smuggle 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar of the House of Lords - enough to completely destroy the building. (Physicists from the Institute of Physics later calculated that the 2,500kg of gunpowder beneath Parliament would have obliterated an area 500 metres from the centre of the explosion). #bonfire #bonfirenight #bonfires #london #thisislondon #londres #visitlondon #shutup_london #londonlife #maybeldner #londonpop #rainbow_wall #my_daily_capture #chiquesnourtemo #loves_world #igpowerclub #arte_of_nature A photo posted by @london_nature on
