6 Rocking Stockings

Even if you stopped believing in Santa decades ago, there's still something so exhilarating about putting your hand into a festive stocking come Christmas morning to find a heap of little gifts and sweet treats.

Plus, a bright, bold stocking hung on a door handle or above a fireplace can make for quite a lovely decor addition over the December period, particularly because a number of local designers have taken it upon themselves to makeover the old Santa sack with trendy twists.

Here are a few of our favourites – we think they’re lovely enough to serve as gifts themselves (especially number six).

1. The Designer Stocking

StockingZanainsitu

A hip take on the standard stocking, these pretty gift receptacles from Zana come in two of the brand’s popular prints: gold triangle and Swiss cross. They’re made from 100% cotton and available for R110 from zanaproducts.co.za.

2. The Reimagined Stocking

StockingCRinsitu

Country Road has reinvented the traditional stocking somewhat with this pretty 100% cotton Winne Santa Sack. It comes complete with a pull tie and a modern geometric design reminiscent of a Christmas tree, and it tones down the typically loud red, green and gold Yuletide hues with a pastel colour palette. We think it’s safe to say that this is the Christmas stocking for the discerning mature individual. Get it from Woolworths for R249.

3. The Heritage Stocking

StockingSkinnyinsitu

Beautifully contemporary in design, these lovely local Christmas stockings from Skinny laMinx give a nod to South Africa’s heritage as their ‘Herds’ print is inspired by rock art paintings from caves in the Cederberg Mountains of the Cape. They come in deep red and hide grey and are available from the Skinny laMinx Bree Street shop and online at skinnylaminx.co.za for R195.

4. The Advent Calendar Stocking

 StockingW

Why have one Christmas stocking when you can have 24? Though not your traditional option, this fun felt advent calendar is made up of a string of little numbered stockings pegged on a hessian rope that you can fill with treats to open in the lead-up to Christmas day. So you can count down the days to your big stocking with mini versions. This clever creation is available from Woolworths for R299.

5. The Bossy Stocking

Stockingbossy

Like the Country Road option, this sweet Waiting for Santa Sack doesn’t come in the conventional sock shape, but it’s still super attractive and it serves the same purpose. We love that the cotton bag is as big as a pillow case, so you can fit plenty of gifts in there, and that it reminds you not to peek until D-day. It’s on sale at In Good Company for R180.

6. The Wino's Stocking

This cheeky boot-shaped Santa’s Flask doesn’t quite qualify as a Christmas stocking, but we just had to include it anyway. After all, could there be a better stocking filler than a few litres of wine? Made from food-grade plastic, the festive vessel can hold up to 2.25 litres of liquid and it comes with a pouring nozzle. Order it on Amazon for around R390.
