Seaside Cottages

If you feel like getting out of Cape Town for a weekend, but don't want to travel too far, Paternoster is an ideal getaway just a two-hour drive away. This coastal village is literally that – a quiet, remote little town that offers absolute solitude – and will help you unwind with its hospitable nature and pristine stretches of beach. For those who prefer the self-catering option but still want to enjoy the usual comforts of home, the Paternoster Seaside Cottages are a great option. They’re well-equipped, luxuriously decorated and extremely cosy, making them a superb destination even during the winter months. To top it off, there’s also a glorious fireplace in the house which will warm up the interior on those frosty nights. At the edge of a cluster of homes overlooking the beach, lie two of these tranquil, open-plan units, which offer visitors a well-deserved break. The spacious cottages (with two separate bedrooms that have their own en-suite bathroom), open up onto lovely patios that are great for braaiing or entertaining. Each one also has its own rim flowing pool, perfect for cooling down on warmer days. Cooking at the cottage is made easy with a built-in hob and oven, as well as the usual kitchen essentials like a kettle, microwave, toaster and all the crockery and condiments you’d normally require. All bed linen and bath towels are also provided, so you only need to remember a swimming towel for a dip in the pool or if you’re planning to spend time at the beach. Although you’ll get a start-up pack of necessities like tea, coffee and sugar, you are advised to bring your own in addition to this. There is a small general dealer as you drive into Paternoster so you don’t have to go very far to stock up. Besides the two bigger Seaside Cottages, there are also four other units under the same management. These are ‘Pasella’, Kliphuisie’, ‘Sugarshack’ and ‘Oppie draai’, each with its own distinct appeal and special qualities. So if you’re looking at going away with friends or family, you could book more than one cottage to accommodate a big group. The Seaside Cottages are also situated in close proximity to the popular local restaurant, Gaaitjie, offering you the choice to eat out if you don’t feel like cooking. There is beach access just below Gaaitjie, making the ocean a quick two-minute stroll away. Primarily a fishing village, Paternoster’s beaches give you the opportunity to view fishermen at work, and also to buy fresh fish and seafood almost wherever you go. It’s also worthwhile to take a walk along the beach to check out the sights and to get some fresh air. You’ll probably encounter dozens of sea gulls along the way, nibbling the debris on the beach and hunting for fresh mussels. It’s quite a sight to watch them swoop down to pick up the mussels, then fly high up only to drop them so that they crack open on the sand. With gulls, waves and delicious seafood being the extent of the activity in Paternoster, it really is a destination you head to for a time out and to enjoy some peace and quiet… Visit seasidecottage.co.za for more information or to make a booking. You will be required to collect your cottage keys from Abalone House upon your arrival, while you also have the option of enjoying fabulous meals at their on-site restaurant, Saffron. Simply speak to the manager on duty if you wish to arrange this. Text: Kim Grové Images: Supplied
