Nestled deep in the Scarborough fynbos lies the tranquil holiday retreat of Ingrid and Mark Corbett, and their three young sons. As a rule, the family leave the TV and video games at home in Hout Bay and only pack books, board games and art supplies, which opens up their downtime to endless creative possibilities. A playful space, Ingrid’s love of local design, bright shades and Mother Nature is the inspiration behind her fun furnishings, and a strong influence for her decor company Quirky Me. The essential earthiness of the house is obvious, even through the strong pops of colour. ‘It’s a house that feels grounded and very much part of its environment,’ says Ingrid. ‘Such an immense amount of thought was given to every detail of its construction. Even the slab of wood used for the kitchen counter was left raw along the edge, just as it was shaped by nature.’ To read more about our House of the Month, turn to page 64 of the December 2012 issue, which is on shelf now.
