house #7 - barefoot luxury
Photographs James Silverman WHEN August 2012 ISSUE Luxury WHERE Voëlklip, Hermanus, Western Cape WHAT A sumptuous modern beach house that’s grand in scale, voluptuous in its use of materials, and yet stylistically in keeping with its breathtaking natural environment. Designed by Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects (SAOTA), the house’s language is appropriately simple, taking inspiration from the surrounding indigenous vegetation in its liberal use of balau timber, from decks and cladding to pergolas. A split-level configuration allows for open-plan living and entertaining, with the orientation shifting from the sea-facing side to a slick courtyard and pool area on the opposite end. Voluminous it might be but there are plenty of intimate spaces, too, with comfort the underlying feature of the home’s elegantly casual fittings and furnishings.
