house #5 - natural perspective

Styling Retha Ericksen Photographs David Ross WHEN June 2012 ISSUE Winter WHERE Voëlklip, Hermanus, Western Cape WHAT In complementary tones of grey and harmonious linear forms, four separate, self-contained units are set against a backdrop of towering mountains. A united family decision led to the development of the property on which, previously, only the family's holiday home had stood. Its original architect, Gardiol Bergenthuin, was enlisted with the design of the new structures, which boast strong green credentials and maximise the views of the domineering mountains via generous windows and skylights. Brightly lit as a result, the surprisingly cosy, modern spaces juxtapose a minimalist palette and masculine elements such as floating concrete stairs with organic features of natural stone and custom-designed wooden furniture.
