Adam’s Apple

Styling Sven Alberding Photographs Elsa Young When January 2010 Where Braamfontein, Johannesburg What A city apartment… With a well-developed eye for design, property developer Adam Levy revamped a building in the formerly neglected part of the city, adding glass frontage and turning the floors into sprawling, luxurious apartments. As he notes, he wanted to complete his own space (over two floors) first, but it took him five years to ‘find the best artisans for the job’. The result was worth the wait – a spectacular split-level home. A double-volume entrance welcomes visitors with awe-inspiring views of the Nelson Mandela Bridge and the CBD, while the upper-level lounge and deck provide endless panoramas of Braamfontein. 'Dating back to the 1950s, the building had such architectural integrity with its minimalist feel and arched ceilings that I could just see its potential' – Adam Levy
