Spring Gardening

Compiled by Mariola Jakutowicz Fouché Photographs Supplied GOING SOLO Yuppiechef.co.za's garden toolset (R520) by Eva Solo has flexible rubber handles that nest together for easy storage, and provide a firm grip. Plus their hollow shape allows easy seed dispersal through a hole in the end. A GIANT SUCCESS ‘I am, because we are’ is the maxim that Jacky Goliath, MD of De Fynne wholesale nursery in Simondium goes by. Jacky and co-owner Elton Jeft has nurture the personal growth of their 25-strong staff as much as they do their indigenous plants. De Fynne produces fynbos plants, fruit trees and other ornamentals for the agricultural and horticultural market, and supplies Woolworths stores. Germinating in Elton’s back yard near Stellenbosch in 2001, the business has grown from 1 000 Phylica pubescens and Coleonema plants to 600 000 plants today. Last year, Jacky took first prize as Female Entrepreneur in the Commercial sector (provincial and national) in a competition run by the Dept of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery. She followed that with the 2012 African Entrepreneur in Agribusiness in Africa award. Email jacky@defynne.co.za.
