For the past 12 years, Elgin Open Gardens has delighted visitors with an annual celebration of its verdant spaces and their creators. About an hour from Cape Town, Elgin ‘apple country’ has a cooler, wetter climate and is known for its apple orchards, fynbos, wines and nurseries. This year’s event showcases 25 gardens from established older estates, to recently planted ones in villages and on smallholdings. New gardens on view will include Palmiet River, originally designed by early Elgin pioneer, Kathleen Murray. Apart from bountiful displays, expect also plant sales, teas and light meals in some of the gardens. Art and sculpture exhibitions include the Elgin Artists’s Group at Glenbrae, as well as botanical artist Vicki Thomas’ work at Eikenhof. Bacchus takes care of the rest, with cider tastings and the Elgin Wine Guild’s launch of its Elegantly Elgin Wine Route.3–4 and 10–11 November, in the Elgin, Vyeboom and Bot River districts; elginopengardens.co.za
