Blooming Camellias

'Tis the season for vibrant, frilly camellias in gardens across the country, but there's no where more full of colour than at Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West. Here you'll find the only International Camellia Garden of Excellence on the continent. It's time you booked a guided tour this August. Get ready to see almost 550 different cultivars from France, Japan, America and of course, South Africa too. In 2010, the estate was named on of the 39 International Camellia Gardens of Excellence in the world by the the International Camellia Society. 'This is the prime time to view these magnificent pink, red and white blooms,' said Vergelegen horticulturist Richard Arm in a press release recently. 'We have over 1000 camellia bushes at the estate, some of which are extremely rare.' Arm will be leading the tours. Departing from Stables restaurant on the estate at 09h00 and again at 14h30 on Saturday and Sunday, 1 and 2 August, these tour offer some insight into how to garden camellias successfully. The one-and-a-half hour tours accommodate a maximum of 30 people and include tea and a selection of cakes at Stables restaurant. Cost is R100 per person and booking is essential.
