The Yard opens its doors in the Mother City

Cape Town's burgeoning Silo District at the V&A Waterfront has received major international and local attention since the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) last month, and the creative hub isn't done impressing. Offering a range of carefully selected options and services to visitors as well as surrounding businesses, The Yard is the Silo District's new concept store and eatery, scheduled to open on 6 October. This innovative, open-plan space is headed up by retail and hospitality guru Abigail Bisogno and her business partner, restaurateur GP Singh. 'The inspiration for The Yard came from my wine-farm background, and my creation of the Spice Route Destination in Paarl, together with my partner’s experience in the food industry over the last 15 years,' Abigail says. The Yard, which is located close to the museum, stretches over 600m² – and for good reason. As you enter, shelves of preserves, homemade pastas, coffees and fine chocolates demarcate the delicatessen section on the right, which includes an on-the-go area with house-made smoothies, iced teas and flavoured waters. In the rest of the delicatessen you'll find a Rosetta Roastery coffee counter, fridges stocked with farm-fresh cheeses and charcuterie, and a shopping zone featuring a selection of ceramics, homeware and accessories. Next is the fresh salad and warm buffet station, whose selections change daily, and adjacent to this is the main drinks bar, with its marble and copper counter top and relaxed vibe. The crowning glory is the fine-dining section, which will be open for lunch and dinner as well as being available to hire for private events. Complete with long tables, plush booths, ambient lighting and local artworks adorning the walls, here guests will be able to sample delectable dishes influenced by Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Oriental and Indian cuisine. yard 'GP and I share a vision and passion for Euro-Asian cuisine that seeks to unify Asian-Indian-European flavours,' Abigail says. 'We intend to make our new space in the Silo District the destination where this type of food and our unique brand of retail can be experienced and enjoyed.'
