Wishbone Cafe & Bistro Bar opens at 11 Alice Lane

Wishbone Cafe & Bistro Bar is situated in The Piazza of the newly completed 11 Alice Lane centre, which sees lots of foot traffic from Sandton CBD’s working professionals. With interiors by Joburg-based company Black Sheep Design, it's a casual yet sophisticated spot equally suited to visit during your lunch break or for after-work drinks. The restaurant showcases regularly updated artworks in partnership with Berman Contemporary gallery; currently on display are pieces by Stefan Blom, Roberto Vaccaro and Marcus Neustetter. Executive chef Peter van Schaik describes his culinary style as ‘contemporary but based in classic French and European cuisine’. Wanting the food to be unpretentious with a focus on good ingredients and flavours, he’s created a menu with something for every palate, offering up American-style classics and Asian-inspired dishes side by side. Wishbone’s comprehensive offering includes a variety of breakfast options, salads, sushi, gourmet sarmies, a tapas section, pizzas and pastas, seafood, curries as well as heavier meat and poultry dishes. We opted for the succulent pork belly, braised for six hours and served with pomme puree, caramelised apples and red cabbage and, just as delicious, the seafood risotto with flavours of saffron and turmeric, served with prawn butter and tomato confit. For dessert, we’d suggest a local cheese board with seasonal fruit and homemade preserves or, if you’re after something even more indulgent, try the crème brûlée with lavender and shortbread or the berry-centered dark chocolate fondant to end your meal on a seriously sweet note. This new establishment is worth a visit for its signature cocktails alone, which range from the Morning Martini with marmalade, pineapple juice and Sipsmith gin to the Market Mint Julep with Maker’s Mark bourbon, a hint of bitters, pear and mint leaves. If you’re more inclined to sip on some vino while taking in Wishbone’s fabulous sunset views, there’s an extensively curated wine list too. Ask for one of the restaurant’s two expert sommeliers to recommend the perfect pairing for you. Visit wishbonebistro.co.za for more details or to make a reservation.
