Made with spices, citrus fruit and sugar or honey, Glühwein is delicious when entertaining in colder months. Make your own from scratch or buy it ready made. Either way, it’s yummy! HL Food Editor Raphaella Frame-Tolmie recommends this quick and easy Glühwein recipe:
750ml dry red wine
⅔ cup granulated sugar
Juice and peel of 1 lemon and 1 orange
2 cardamom pods
2 bay leaves
2 cinnamon sticks
Place all the ingredients in a heavy-based saucepan. Stir over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, then turn down the heat and leave to simmer for 50 to 60 minutes. Strain the peel and spices from the wine and serve hot. For an extra kick, add a shot of cherry liqueur, brandy or rum to each glass before serving. Glühwein is perfect for fireside sipping. Enjoy!
