Weekend with Siba

Friday evenings are usually reserved for date nights with my husband, Brian. Sometimes, though, we meet with some of our couple-friends to catch up. We like to vary where we go depending on the mood. For sundowners we might head to a spot with a sea view, or Chef’s Warehouse & Canteen and The Fat Cactus for more casual dining. We love eating at the Mount Nelson Hotel or Paranga in Camps Bay for a more formal dinner. We often go to Haiku and Bukhara, which are favourites for their consistent service. On a Saturday morning, nothing beats just-squeezed veggie juice with a shot of ginger to go with freshly made food from a market. I like the young buzz of The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill. I have a good relationship with most of the vendors and like to get there early before the mad rush. For a more mature environment, we’ll go to the Oranjezicht City Farm. It has a playground for kids, which my son, Lonwabo, absolutely loves, and where he often gets too adventurous! The Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay is a treat for something different. siba2 We prefer a more relaxed afternoon picnicking somewhere with a beautiful view like Signal Hill, or pizzas at chilled-out Massimo’s in Hout Bay. But Saturday nights are more social; we enjoy a good braai with loved ones where there’s an emphasis on sharing food, there isn’t a huge expense or hassle, and everyone brings something, like a salad or dessert. Sunday mornings start with church after a quick home breakfast. Most weeks we have a traditional Sunday lunch at home, at a friend’s or at my sister’s place. If not, we’ll head out to Willoughby & Co or The Grand Café and Beach at the V&A Waterfront to meet friends. Our weekend winds down with a relaxing family dinner and movie to prepare for the week ahead.   Instagram sibamtongana Twitter @SibaMtongana Facebook Siba Mtongana   SIBA’S WEEKEND DIRECTORY Chef’s Warehouse & Canteen, 92 Bree Street, Cape Town, 021 422 01 28 The Fat Cactus, 5 Park Rd Gardens, Cape Town, 021 4225022 Mount Nelson Hotel, 76 Orange Street, Cape Town, 021 483 1000 Paranga, Shop No. 1 The Promenade Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, 021 438 0404 Haiku and Bukhara, 58 Burg St., Cape Town, 021 424 7000 The Neighbourgoods Market, 373 Albert Road, Woodstock, Oranjezicht City Farm, behind The Lookout venue at the V&A Waterfront, Granger Bay The Bay Harbour Market, 31 Harbour Road, Hout Bay, 082 570 5997 Massimo’s, Oakhurst Farm Park, Hout Bay, 021 790 5648 Willoughby & Co, Shop 6132, Victoria Wharf, V&A Waterfront, 021 418 6115 The Grand Café and Beach, Granger Bay Road.
