The Winelands’ best kept secret

Looking for a winter lunch retreat that’s guaranteed to leave an impression? We recently gave Towerbosch Earth Kitchen a try and have to admit that it’s the place to be for hearty South African-style dining and unmatched beautiful surroundings. Located just outside Stellenbosch at Knorhoek Wine Estate, Towerbosch is offering a wholesome new winter menu packed with warm-me-up soups and bredies. As we soon learnt, it’s the perfect recharger in between wine tasting in the Winelands. You simply arrive to be greeted with tasty lunch options, thirst-quenching beverages and spend an afternoon unwinding with loved ones. If you are fortunate enough to venture off into this region of the Winelands during the week, Towerbosch offers a special winter menu from Wednesdays to Saturdays, comprised of whatever chef duo Westley Müller and Carmen van der Merwe are in the mood to conjure up. Guaranteed to be on the menu, however, are their legendary country-style soups and bredies. We can attest to the fact that their roasted cherry tomato soup is one-of-a-kind. Other soup options include chunky pea and ham, Malay spice cauliflower, red lentil, and home smoked haddock. This course is then followed by a slow-cooked stew – which they appropriately call a “one pot wonder” – served with a glass of Knorhoek’s Two Cubs Cape style red blend. This two course meal only sets you back R90 per head – an unbelievable price to pay for the world-class food and beautiful setting you get in return. The latter is amplified in the al fresco, open braai area situated alongside a rock pool, where guests are invited to congregate for a relaxing Sunday Asado lunch for R165 per person. Tempted to return the next day, we were informed that these Argentinian style braais begin with empanada (filled pastries), then a selection of fresh breads, followed by juicy meat from the braai with a variety of equally appealing side dishes – my personal favourite being the roast potatoes. It’s also a chance for parents to let their kids run wild in a big open space while enjoying a great family meal together. And what city parent could resist that? Please note that reservations are essential . 021-865-2958.   The Towerbosch winter warmer menu is available from May until August 2011.
