The Lunar Calendar

The Biodynamic Planting Calendar, which was first developed in the 1950s, is a fascinating element of biodynamic agriculture. The practice effectively states that the constellations within the Zodiac govern many aspects of biodynamic farming. Avondale is one wine farm that is actively endorsing this calendar, with the belief that it also plays a role in how a wine is experienced on certain days. We chatted to Avondale's owner, Johnathan Grieve, about the calendar and a recent taste test that revealed some interesting results... @houseleisureSA Ever wondered how the moon affects the taste of your wine? We’re chatting to Johnathan at @AvondaleWine to find out more. #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine Good morning #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Hi Johnathan – thanks for joining us. So, what is the theory behind the lunar calendar and its effect on wine? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine Basically there are four different types of day and the wines taste differently on each day #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Very interesting! We hear you & a panel of wine lovers put it to the test. Tell us more about this experiment? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine We wanted to take people who know wine and not necessarily believe in BD (biodynamic farming) and show them the influences #LunaTasteTest. So we had 4 tastings on each of the days to evaluate how the wines where showing #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA And what results did you notice? Did the wines taste different on each of the days? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine It was incredible and clearly showed the Influence of the Tasting calendar, confirmed by all the panellists #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Did the panellists know which cycle they were tasting the wines in beforehand? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine No, we specifically kept this from them, we also made the venue and environment as constant as possible #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA And tell us, what wines were tested in the experiment? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine We tasted the full Avondale range: Armilla, Anima, Camissa, Cyclus, Samsara, La Luna #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA So which is the best cycle for wine tasting? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine The good days where the Fruit for its expression of fruit, the Leaf for its expression of flavours/minerality #LunaTasteTest. But the best was the Flower day for the balance between all of the above #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Sounds like a worthwhile test! What is your connection to the lunar calendar? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine We farm according to Biodynamic principles, where we make use of this calander throughout our production #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Does this mean that only biodynamic wines are influenced by the lunar cycles? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine All wines are influenced, of course wines that are produced according to BD show the most expression #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Interesting. Will the calendar affect food and wine pairings? If so, how? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine It has such a huge influence - as illustrated it will also influence food pairings, taste and experience #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Fantastic! So do you think more wine farms and restaurants will be using the calendar in future? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine There has been a huge amount of interest and interaction from all walks of life #LunaTasteTest. Most importantly it brings back the romanticism in wine, and of course the link into nature #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Would this calendar apply to everyone all over the world? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine Yes, different timings from the northern to the southern hemisphere but it affects everybody; we all part of the galaxy #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA What advice would you give to wine lovers who would like to try this out for themselves at home? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine Avoid Root days and definitely keep your best wines for Flower days, most importantly try, try and try again #LunaTasteTest. Any advice needed please let us know and we will guide you through it. #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Perfect, thanks. Very importantly, where can we find this calendar? #LunaTasteTest @Avondalewine  The best place to find it is on my blog at biologicwine.co.za/events/month #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Great, we will definitely check it out! Johnathan, thanks for your time and all the insights about your #LunaTasteTest. @Avondalewine  It’s been my pleasure, always great to chat about what we are up to #LunaTasteTest @houseleisureSA Absolutely.
