On 16 May 2013, House and Leisure brought you our very first night market.
Held at the fabulous Katy’s Palace Bar in Kramerville, the event was clearly at the top of every Joburger’s list with a solid stream of visitors in and out of the doors all night. The venue combines a rare view of the Sandton CBD skyline with an eclectic Indian palace inspired interior. Bringing all our fans together under one roof with market stalls full of gorgeous goodies, food, drinks and live music turned out to be a recipe for success and one that is eagerly anticipated to return. Stalls offered guests everything from textiles and handcrafts to jewellery and clothes from some of the city’s hottest retailers, while our photo booth kept the camera confident busy for hours. Thanks go to Viva Vodka, who met guests at the door with a complimentary drink and also provided us with a lavish VIP section for the night. Let’s not forget Glen Carlou who provided world-class wines and Mezepoli who filled tummies with their delicious Greek treats. With Cape Town and Durban now in the pipeline, you’d better stay tuned in. See below for information about the vendors from our first-ever night market. THE AFRICA CRAFT TRUST

About: Local fashion duo Paul van der Spuy and Adrian Heneke launched the first bluecollarwhitecollar store in Cape Town in 2008, followed by Johannesburg in 2010. bluecollarwhitecollar is about amazing shirts and clothing; quality garments with a great fit. There is no great vision or message, no specific target market – just clothing that makes the wearer feel good and look stylish. bluecollarwhitecollar has little to do with fashion and trends. It is rather an individual expression of what Paul and Adrian feel as they look to the past at beautifully constructed items and apply that inspiration to today’s modern looks. The store carries blue-collar (industrial worker inspired) casual shirting and white-collar (smart office worker and evening) shirts in cottons and linens. In addition, they offer a range of T-shirts and retro boardshorts, beautifully constructed ladies shirts as well as a semi-bespoke shirt service (for Joburg customers only). This is especially true in South Africa, where independent designers typically don’t have the budget or resources to market their goods on a large scale. Room Online hopes to change all that. About: The Griffin Craft Beer Gastropub is Martin Jakoby and Thomas Hughes’ latest venture. The first of its kind in Johannesburg, The Griffin pays homage to the best beer and wine from home and abroad, while offering beautiful, fresh, seasonal food in the coolest surroundings. Martin, a qualified veterinary surgeon-turned entrepreneur and Thom, a chef with 16 years of local and international experience, arrived home from London in 2005 with the simple dream of creating the kind of place people fall in love with. Before leaving London, Thom won the acclaimed Evening Standard Pub of the Year award for the Settle Inn in Battersea and was also Head Chef of the famous White Horse (AKA Sloaney Pony) in Parson’s Green. And now, having fallen in love with all things craft and thinking that it’s high time that South Africa enjoyed the gastropub trend, they’ve created The Griffin – the ultimate place for friends to meet, eat, drink and be merry.
