Cape Town gets a new ice-cream and doughnut spot in Sea Point
Between Jerry's Burger Bar and the new Nonna Lina Ristorante in Sea Point, Cape Town, is a pretty-in-pink ice-cream and doughnut store. Stepping into The Dairy Den is like walking into a pastel-coloured fairytale, where calories don't exist and sweet treats are on another level. Pink and white stripes adorn the walls, which are decorated with giant artworks of their innovative offerings.
Owners and sisters Tasia and Lexi's family have been making ice cream in South Africa since 1948, shortly after their grandfather arrived in the country on a boat from Greece. Using their secret family recipe, the duo keep their soft serve simple, offering only chocolate and vanilla because they know that basics are best.
That's not to say they don't offer tasty combinations. The menu has old favourites like Flake 99 and a genuine Belgian chocolate-dipped soft serve. There is also a range of colourful swirl cones: syrup-infused soft serves come in flavours like strawberry, bubblegum and toffee. 'For a bit of fun we’ve launched with a tribute to Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi with The Mint Dragon, a vanilla soft serve dipped in peppermint pieces and served on a black sugar cone,' says Lexi. Also on offer are black sugar cones made from crushed Oreo biscuits and a 'conut' made from doughnut dough dipped in Belgian chocolate.
At the counter you'll also find a range of exciting gourmet doughnuts to entice. The freshly baked creations include brownie and strawberry cheesecake flavours, and can be topped off with cinnamon and sugar, powdery icing sugar, or dipped in chocolate.
With all these unique offerings, you may be worried about your pocket, but The Dairy Den is focused on providing an affordable product. 'In a space where ice-cream stores are popping up every other month, many with weird and wonderful products (and equally crazy prices), we want to be the store that offers great-tasting quality products that everyone can afford,' comments Lexi. Kid's soft serve cones are R6.50, while simple ice-creams are R13 and doughnuts start at R5.
