The Cape Town HL Night Market: 28 November 2013

On 28 November 2013, House and Leisure, in association with Old Mutual, brought you our first Cape Town Night Market at Wembley Square. We selected some of South Africa’s foremost designers, makers and artisans to showcase and sell their creations. From fashion and decor items to homeware and jewellery, visitors certainly took advantage of the beautiful offerings on sale. Guests sipped on welcome cocktails from Cruz Vodka and Magnum Cream Liqueur, as well as delicious wines from Glen Carlou while they browsed through the local designer wares and artisan foods. Added to this was live entertainment by Jared and Grattan Coetzer. The House and Leisure team also celebrated our 20th anniversary issue with a glass of Glen Carlou MCC and macaroons from Cassis. See below for information about the vendors from our Cape Town night market. VENDORS: GLEN CARLOU Glen-Carlou About: In 2012 Glen Carlou celebrated its 25th vintage – a comparatively young estate in the South African wine industry – yet we are proud to say, we have built a reputation as one of South Africa’s leading producers. Under the ownership and management of the world-renowned Hess Family, we continue to produce wines of exceptional quality and consistency, growing from strength to strength. Since 1985, we have only had three winemakers – whose collective passion has ensured that Glen Carlou has produced consistently exceptional wines for almost three decades. For us, creating classic, award-winning wines is a wonderful and gratifying journey, but it is not the destination. Consistency, expertise and a commitment to always deliver beyond expectation is what we strive for with every bottle of Glen Carlou wine. This is why we are known as the ‘Curators of Classic Wines’. A year on Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy drink has been one of the top selling energy drinks in Woolworths and of the fastest growing across retailers nationally. There is a real movement towards healthier and sustainable living, and this is where the creation of Scheckter’s OrganicEnergy stemmed from. The ingredients are all completely organic and free of any toxic chemicals like herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, GMO, preservatives, artificial colours, flavours or synthetic caffeine. A mix of the finest Sicilian organic lemon, Iranian organic pomegranate and German and Austrian elderberry juices are added to a little raw unprocessed cane sugar. The active caffeine ingredient is Brazilian Guarana raw green coffee bean extract and organic green tea, which give a more sustained release of energy than other energy drinks. Ginseng is finally added which helps mental performance and provides additional energy and support for the body’s immune system. You wear jewellery because it reflects something about your character and personal experiences, and everybody is different, so I want my jewellery to resonate with each individual who wears it. I look to create jewellery that reflects the wearer’s courage to stand apart from the crowd, to be confident in one’s own individuality and therefore their own distinct beauty. I love organic processes and responses, and I love to play with jewellery; my best ranges come from just playing with metal, letting it organically form into something beautiful and exciting. Phone: 076-126-586 Email: Website: EMULATE Emulate About: Nature is often imported onto surface design applications as flat, stylised objects where its intricate beauty is often neglected. Inspired by local beaches which surround Cape Town, surface designer Tersia Fisher has evaluated old methods by bridging the gap between stylised design aesthetics by developing a textured and handcrafted fabrication. A problem with mass production has been the neglect of 'old-fashioned' hand-stitching techniques, which are often replaced by machines. As a result of mass production, many offcut textiles do not biodegrade and offer a source of raw material, supporting a more sustainable design philosophy. Additionally, and in essence, the range reputes the seashell as a symbol of rejuvenation. By utilising unwanted materials, each piece is developed to inspire a newly found value. Like nature, no two pieces are alike. Each item is hand assembled and hand finished to ensure something with character, timelessness and a sense of the unexpected is created. Modern Gesture explores different production techniques and craft skills in a very basic way, as well as themes and experimentation with the physical and tactile properties of mixed mediums such as ceramics and plywood offcuts. Modern Gesture believes that in each piece created, a story is embedded into its materials, showing the time and care that is taken in the creation of each item and ensuring each piece holds unique characteristics.
