Sushi and burritos may be two of the last words you’d ever expect to hear together in one sentence. Considering their respective cultural origins, these dishes are pretty much polar opposites – and yet, sushi burritos have become huge hits across the globe. Now, for the first time in South Africa, you can enjoy this Asian-Latin fusion food at the newly opened Sushi Burrito & Co in Melrose, Johannesburg.
Inside the restaurant, contemporary European design elements seamlessly complement touches of Japanese pop art, and the overall environment is peaceful and friendly. The real meeting of cultures, though, is decidedly the menu: with just over a dozen burritos to choose from, each offers a unique combination of flavours and textures.
The Subota pork burrito packs a spicy punch, with deep-fried pork neck and capsicum, carrot spaghetti, bean sprouts and sriracha sauce coming together in a delectable ensemble of flavours. The Sukiyaki-style beef burrito is another favourite and is filled with sliced beef, onion, beetroot, lettuce, and cilantro with yaki-niku sauce, all rolled in the restaurant’s signature crunchy layer.
Other than the sushi burritos, the restaurant also offers a wide range of Asian-inspired dishes such as the Taiwanese street-food inspired bao buns and salads. The poke bowls are another feature on the menu and they’re all served with either fresh salad or rice – the ponzu-marinated salmon with crispy kale, wakame, edamame and a dash of enchilada mayo is a hit with us.
Although the combination of sushi with burritos is not a new concept, eateries in major cities such as New York and London are offering their take on this trend, while Sushi Burrito & Co is ushers in a creative new cuisine in South Africa – we say, count us in!
