Oldenburg Vineyards is all set to welcome its new winemaker, Nic van Aarde. Van Aarde will take over from the current general manager and veteran winemaker Philip Costandius from 1 November 2018.
While Costandius is stepping down from his role, he will continue to provide consultation services to Oldenburg in the future. Van Aarde has gained a reputation as one of South Africa’s leading winemakers. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture (Oenology and Viticulture) as well as a Bachelor of Commerce degree, both from Stellenbosch University, Van Aarde is well equipped for his new position.
He has worked in Australia, New Zealand, USA, France and India, and now will produce wine in Banghoek Valley between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, where Oldenburg Vineyards is located – an off-the-beaten-track wine experience destination.
Van Aarde’s passion lies in exploring the intricacies of the vineyard, viticulture and winemaking techniques, and the potential for making super premium wines by combining these major variables together.
In addition to appointing a new winemaker, Oldenburg Vineyards is in the final stages of completing its new state-of-the-art cellar and winemaking facilities, which will be commissioned by Van Aarde for the 2019 harvest.
Proprietor of Oldenburg Vineyards Adrian Vanderspuy says, ‘It is an exciting time for the entire team, and the introduction of Nic into our new winery creates a tipping point for our business.’
