visiting khuluma, durban’s latest addition

Roxanne Robinson; Supplied

Inspired by the hustle and bustle of cool locals who frequent Durban's popular Station Drive precinct, Khuluma is the newest addition for weekly coffee-loving imbibers. The name 'Khuluma' – Zulu for 'speak' – is apt: what better conversation starter than a steaming cup of coffee?

The space itself is seriously good-looking: pink walls, pink plates, yellow wire tables (reminiscent of your parents' wonky garden furniture), suitably paired with tiny, brightly coloured flowers that sit atop your scrambled eggs. It all comes together for one perfectly Instagrammable café.

Formerly from an advertising and design background, owner Faheem was looking to open a space that was not only visually pleasing, but also served great food and coffee. Khuluma was designed along with Amanda Jaffar from The Vintager and boasts a courtyard for live music, exhibitions and private themed dinners. The menu, developed with Kirti Kamal from Gourmet Foods SA, offers simple but tasty breakfast and lunch options. Choose from scrambled eggs with chilli and feta or halloumi salad with harissa, mint crème fraîche and sesame seeds, and other snack-style foods – not to mention sweet treats served throughout the day. When you visit, don't hold off trying the banana bread. It’s served with espresso butter made from blended Khuluma beans – their speciality.

Durbanites are always looking for a new spot to have an after-work drink or bespoke meal, and that may not be far off if Faheem’s plans come to fruition – plans to foster a feel-good community vibe centred around positivity and togetherness. Keep your eyes on their Instagram @khuluma.dbn for more info and for drool-worthy snaps of sweet treats.

Open Monday to Friday 6am–4pm; Saturday and Sunday 7am–1pm. 6 Station Dr, Durban (inside the warehouse).
