Handmade Ceramic Plates
Posted: 28 June 2013
Gemma Orkin’s new range of ceramic plates are beautifully sculpted and individually painted by hand. Inspired by nature and the things Gemma loves, such as food, family, colour, flowers and birds, the plates are an ode to nature and a perfectly unique ceramic collection to add to your home. Gemma has worked in ceramics for more than 20 years and makes the pieces from coils of clay, hand painting them individually. No two plates are the same. HL was especially interested to know why Gemma chose ceramics as her art medium. ‘I majored in print making at UCT and I really enjoy the chemical process – where you work on something but out of the kiln comes a lovely surprise,' she says. ‘I love that I am able to do what I love everyday.’ Based in Cape Town, you can purchase Gemma’s plates from Melissa’s The Food Shop or order through her website at gemmaorkin.co.za.
