Fast flavourful fare at Fuego Tacqueria
Posted: 10 October 2017
Cape Town’s latest taco spot Fuego Taqueria recently opened on Regent Road in Sea Point and looks set to attract those in search of authentic South American flavour. Featuring fare in the form of tacos, ceviche, empanadas and salads, it also caters to the after-dark set by shaking up some of the best margaritas in the city. Fuego was started in January of this year by New York native-turned-Capetonian Jennifer Fernandez, and embodies her passion for the cooking of Latin America. The eatery is inspired by her travels to Mexico as well as the vast wealth of culinary knowledge she acquired while living in New York City. The intimate interiors are slick and stylish, with a nod to the exotic. Pineapple-printed wallpaper stands out against countertops in a creamy marble while pops of bright yellow mimic the restaurant’s vibrant menu. Copper tones add an element of luxury that make Fuego the go-to spot for summer lunching or after-work drinks. We enjoyed a selection of nacho chips with Fuego’s signature guacamole and Pico de gallo salsa as well as patatas bravas – crispy cubed potatoes covered in a spicy aïoli. For mains, we opted for the 'Drunken Chicken' Pollo borracho tacos with a pineapple salsa and the pulled pork tacos with a red cabbage slaw and pickled red onion. The churros – a Spanish deep-fried-dough pastry dusted in cinnamon sugar – are an absolutely necessary way to end off a meal. Arriving with a choice of either dark chocolate or caramel dipping sauces, they are decadent, crisp and decidedly delicious. For those who prefer wine to cocktails, Fuego also offers the revolutionary and rather fun detail of having wines on tap – and fine wines at that. We sipped on a full-bodied Syrah and a rich, buttery Chenin Blanc that originates from the Villiera vineyards of Stellenbosch. Apart from being open to diners, Fuego also hosts regular cooking classes that specialise in Latin American cuisine. Attendance at one of these classes coupled with a few of those aforementioned margaritas may well mean that guests are likely to end up salsa dancing the evening away.
