Drink This: Aperol Spritz

So hip it hurts, the Aperol Spritz is the only drink to be seen sipping this summer. Yes. Really. Haven’t you heard? (In that case, grab a copy of HL’s Jan/Feb issue and flip to our 2014 Trend Forecast now!) Chic Europeans have been onto it for some time, naturellement, and this vivacious, tangerine-hued aperitif has long been a favourite tipple of those effortlessly cosmopolitan Italians. That the classic cocktail has caught on here is something to cheer(s) about. Similar to Campari but on the slightly sweeter side of the taste spectrum, Aperol also pairs well with bitter orange served with lots of crushed ice, but there’s nothing to beat the Spritz. We say feel free to adjust the measurements to suit your taste, and substitute the Prosecco with any dry bubbly (a good way to use up the dregs of the silly season’s sparkling wine stash). Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Aperol
  • 3 parts Prosecco or dry sparkling wine
  • A generous splash of soda
Directions: Serve in a large wine glass loaded up with ice cubes, and garnish with an orange slice. Voila! Text Leigh Robertson
