Babylonstoren Viognier 2014


The holidays might be over, but I still get a nostalgia-tinged taste every time I reach for a bottle of Babylonstoren’s 2014 Viognier – it helps that I’ve had a case of the wine stashed away, though it’s sadly dwindled (because it goes so well with the summery fare I'm cooking right now). There is one last bottle waiting in the fridge.

We spent our very last day of leave wandering around the beautiful gardens and exploring the secret corners at Babylonstoren, a destination unlike any other in South Africa, or further afield, for that matter. Our Australian friends posted more Instagrams here than anywhere else during their SA visit, and I got to enjoy the sights – and a wine tasting – as if I were a proper tourist myself.

Sometimes it’s good to stop being a know-it-all local and enjoy experiencing a place in this way. At the wine tasting, everyone loved the Viognier the most – it was a scorching hot day, and the wine (perfectly chilled, not too much wood, and balancing its richness and complexity with refreshing acidity) went down extraordinarily well. We ordered it again over lunch at the restaurant, Babel, with our salads of produce picked fresh from Babylonstoren’s garden. And then we ordered a case (it sells for R108 per bottle) on our way out.

My philosophy around wine is really quite simple: you take a sip, you like it, the moment in time is elevated, and you think about it just enough to know you’d want to drink it again. I'm opening that bottle tonight.
