AFRO*S is the brainchild of businessman Emil Venter, who’s giving the food truck trend a local twist. Their fresh ‘braai’d chick’n’ is served from their hot black trailer, as they like to call it, and is giving Durbanites new grazing opportunities. The gourmet food truck has evolved over the last few years, mainly on the streets of cosmopolitan cities like New York and London, and originated from street vendors selling quick lunches like hotdogs and sandwiches to workers and tourists looking for a quick bite to eat. This natural trend progression has led to our own brand of food trucks emerging, ready to serve distinct South African flavours on the move. The AFRO*S offering is quick-and-easy meals on the go, and they started with the premise that good takeout need not result in low-quality fast food. AFRO*S chicken is locally sourced, and only fresh ingredients are used to prepare their preservative-free sauces. Freshly baked bread rolls, hand-cut chips and chicken grilled to perfection make up the menu. Burger prices start at a reasonable R25, while a packet of piping hot ‘Tjips’ go for R10, with ‘Koeldrink’ available to douse the flames caused by their delicious, spicy ‘Yoh’ sauce.
