8 Coffee Spots To Wake Up To in SA

Compiled by Lisa van Aswegen Photographs Micky Hoyle, Graeme Wylie We know you need a decent cuppa to wake you up. These places do an excellent job. JASON BAKERY Coffee from Deluxe Coffeeworks, bacon croissants, kick-ass pies and an artisanal menu make baker Jason Lilley’s spot the hippest hangout on Bree Street, Cape Town. DEPARTMENT OF COFFEE With professional coffee entrepreneurs at the helm, this well-priced café in Khayelitsha is taking the township by storm - and rightly so. UNION HAND-ROASTED SA In Buiten Street, Cape Town, Union offers barista training and a relaxed coffee lounge, as well as coffee tastings. It’s co-owned by Union in London so there is some interesting micro-lot origin coffee to look out for. DELUXE COFFEEWORKS One of Cape Town’s top roasters, Deluxe Coffeeworks isn’t about breakfasts and snacks and other drinks, it’s pure coffee. Locals pop in to buy from the tiny original Church Street venue; regulars hang out at the gritty Roodehoek branch; and the newly opened Franschhoek spot delights THE WHIPPET IN LINDEN The Whippet in Linden, a hidden gem in the Jozi ’burbs, not only serves great coffee but also yummy Whippeccinos (white chocolate or toffee blended with espresso). With a drool-worthy menu of slow food for breakfast and lunch, it’s a worthy local favourite haunt. 4TH AVENUE COFFEE ROASTERS This pretty and pink little boutique roastery in Joburg’s Parkhurst offers 100 per cent Arabica coffee. Try the Legendary Pink house blend that bursts with aromas of jasmine and bergamot and heads to flavours of limes, apricots and ESPRESSO LAB MICROROASTERS Tiny and experimental, this clean-cut space at Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill definitely has the ‘laboratory’ look down. MASTERTONS Mastertons is a family-run PE stalwart that has been importing, blending and roasting a vast range since 1924. TRIBE COFFEE The vintage Probat coffee roaster at Tribe Coffee works hard to create delicious blends for this fun shop in the Foundry in Woodstock, Cape Town.
