juta street: a gallery of joburg's cool kids – in polaroids

Garreth van Niekerk

All of Johannesburg's cool kids came out last week for the launch of 99 Juta – the latest retail addition to the inner city’s thriving design scene. The space, located at the upper end of Braamfontein, is home to a series of showrooms featuring the likes of Houtlander, The Urbanitive, Dokter & Misses, Jo Paine, and an extraordinary collection of locally-made ceramics by The Harties Potters.

Architects, Local Studio headed up the refurbishment of the 80-odd year old building, which was in disrepair and concealed behind fibre cement cladding. They added a new saw-tooth roof, which lets new light into the space, with interiors and fittings designed by Dokter and Misses themselves, whose showroom occupies one half of the first floor.
